Most people know about Starbucks classic drink sizes of tall, grande, and venti. What most coffee drinkers don’t know about is a secret size on the Starbucks menu above the venti known as the trenta.
Trenta is Starbucks largest drink size and holds 31oz of liquid, 6 ounces more than a bottle of wine. Only cold drinks like iced tea, lemonades, iced coffees, cold brews, and refreshers can be ordered in the trenta size and will usually cost 30-50 cents more than the venti.
In this article I’ll walk you through exactly how big Starbucks trenta size is, what drinks you’re allowed to order as trenta, and give you some helpful tables showing how healthy and expensive these drinks really are. Let’s get into it!
What is Trenta?
Back in the 90’s, Starbucks only served their drinks in 3 sizes: short (8oz), tall (12oz), and grande (16oz). With short being a small, tall a medium, and a grande large. Eventually, customers got thirstier and wanted their drinks in a bigger size, so the venti was introduced.
The venti is one step above grande and for hot drinks is 20oz and for cold drinks 24oz to give room for ice. After introducing the venti, four sizes seemed like too many to have on the menu, so Starbucks kicked short, the smallest size, off of their in store menus, although you’re still allowed to order your drinks in this size.
Apparently the venti wasn’t big enough to quench the unending thirst of Starbucks customers, so in 2011 the trenta size was introduced. The trenta is 31oz of any cold drink such as iced tea, lemonade, iced coffee, cold brews, or refreshers.
For reference, a bottle of water is 16oz, and a bottle of wine is 25oz. Meaning that when you drink a trenta drink at Starbucks, you’re drinking an amount of liquid equivalent to 2 bottles of water or 1 ¼ bottles of wine.
What Drinks Can I Order in Trenta?
If it’s cold and has ice in it, you can probably order it in the trenta size. With the exception of frappuccinos, iced americanos, iced matcha green tea latte, and iced chai tea lattes.
The reason you can’t order Frappuccinos in trenta size is likely because a frap that big would be a health risk.
A trenta frappuccino, if it existed, and depending on the flavor, would have around 740 calories, 18g of saturated fat (90% of your daily recommended intake), and 110 grams of sugar! There’s no way to drink that and not put your health in danger.
Now it’s not like a venti frappuccino is super great for you either, but it’s not quite as ridiculous as the trenta.
As for the reason why they don’t offer trenta hot beverages, my best guess is that it’s a liability for Starbucks, since if 31oz of boiling coffee spilled on you it could cause some serious burn damage.
Nutrition of Starbucks Trenta Drinks
Trenta drinks are big, but not always super unhealthy depending on the type of drink. Which is why I thought it’d be a good idea to go over the nutrition of all types of trenta drinks.
Below is a table of the amount of calories, saturated fat, sugar, and caffeine in Starbucks trenta drinks.
I couldn’t include every single trenta drink out there because of space, so instead of putting every flavor of iced tea I chose one, and instead of putting every refresher I chose one. If you’d like to know the nutrition of a specific drink you can look it up on the Starbucks app or website, or just assume that the other flavors are pretty similar.

Most trenta sized Starbucks drinks are 30-50 cents more than the venti size. Here’s a small table comparing the prices of trenta drinks. I also included the price of other drink sizes to give you the full picture.
Also a disclaimer that these prices may change over time, and could differ from one Starbucks location to another.
